With reference to the letter from this Office of the 30th

of March last, relative to the application of the Mercantile Bank

of India, Limited, to be granted the privilege of a Note Issue in

Hong Kong, I am directed by Mr. Secretary Chamberlain to request

you to inform your Directors that as a Government Note Issue will

very possibly be shortly established in that Colony, he regrets

that he cannot accede to their request.
